The Latin Playboys, made up almost entirely of four-track recordings that recall, alternately, classic Latino garage rockers like the Premiers ("New Zandu"), the more dissonant work of Tom Waits (the chamberlin-based "Chinese Suprise" and "Viva La Roza") and an imagined Angeleno Fellini (the surrealistic audio verite of "Dumbo"), makes for distinctly uneasy listening. At times, the pair (abetted by producer Mitchell Froom) strive a bit too hard in their attempts to capture the moment: "Manifold D'Amour" and "Pink Steps," in particular, could have been done with a second coat of polish. Hidalgo and Perez pull off a rare feat, however, by making The Latin Playboys at once positively otherworldly and utterly natural. © 1978-1999 College Media, Inc. Used by permission.
