AMG Review A clean and bright effort that delivers some heavy themes, America Town is a very American album: drifting from song to song is like driving through the Midwest going from town to town, each town has its own stories, and not all of them are happy. Singer/songwriter John Ondrasik tackles topics like suicide on "Easy Tonight" and the desire to belong ("Superman") but still manages to see the silver lining in the areas of family ("Easy Tonight") and idolatry ("Michael Jordan"). The songs are sung in a fragile growl, a little like Eddie Vedder singing a lullaby, and backed with some very straightforward acoustic guitar and piano-led rock. The focus is clearly on the lyrics, which are well written and effectively sung. — Zac Johnson Greg Calbi - Mastering Bob Clearmountain - Mixing Shane Keister - Piano, Organ (Hammond), Wurlitzer Frank Filipetti - Mixing Jim Grant - Management Nikki Harris - Vocals Jack Joseph - Mixing Victor Lawrence - Cello Bob Ludwig - Mastering Robert Medici - Drums Jack Joseph Puig - Mixing Brian Scheuble - Engineer, Mixing Greg Latterman - Executive Producer Steve Byram - Design John Ondrasik - Guitar (Acoustic), Piano, Organ (Hammond), Vocals, String Arrangements, Wurlitzer John Halpern - Photography Chris Cuffaro - Photography Jen Wyler - Authoring Joe Zook - Assistant Engineer, Mixing Assistant Richard Anderson - Assistant Engineer, Mixing Assistant Dorian Crozier - Percussion, Drums Bobby Schneck - Guitar (Electric) Evan Lamberg - Executive Producer Rafael Serrano - Assistant Engineer David Boucher - Engineer Sheldon Gomberg - Bass, Bass (Upright) Gregg Wattenberg - Guitar (Acoustic), Bass, Guitar (Electric), Vocals, Producer, Engineer Seth Horan - Engineer, Assistant Engineer Reviews Amazon.co.uk Review America Town, the debut album by Five for Fighting, is actually the work of one guy with a rather substantial chip on his shoulder who's taken his name from the amount of time an ice hockey player spends in the penalty box for fighting. Los Angeles native and erstwhile prodigy John Ondrasik really knows his way around a melody, bolstering it with a dramatic sense of timing and rhythm like a more modern and hipper Elton John. And that defiant chip does makes for powerful poetry, although oftentimes he sacrifices logic and clarity for the sake of iambic pentameter. While "Superman" is a catchy affair about the restrictions of being superhuman and the desire to belong ("I'm only a man in a silly red sheet looking for special things inside me"), it's doubtful that anyone who ever read a DC comic would believe that Superman would ever be "digging for kryptonite on this one-way street", since a loose fragment from Superman's home planet would kill him. At best, Five for Fighting follows in the narrative-based path paved by Counting Crows. --Jaan Uhelszki, Amazon.com Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Five for Fighting is actually j |
